War Plan Orange : the US Strategy to Defeat Japan, 1897-1945

Description

Based on twenty years of research in formerly secret archives, this book reveals for the first time the full significance of War Plan Orange--the U.S. Navy's strategy to defeat Japan, formulated over the forty years prior to World War II.

Britain's favourite writer of narrative non-fiction Bill Bryson travels back in time to a forgotten summer The Small Doses of Homeopathy : Confirmed by the Teachings of Physiology and Pathology (Classic Reprint) download ebook when America came of age, took centre stage, and, in five eventful months, changed the world for ever. In the summer of 1927, America had a booming stock market, a president who worked just four hours a day (and slept much of the rest of the time), a semi-crazed sculptor with a mad plan to carve four giant heads into an inaccessible mountain called Rushmore, a devastating flood of the Mississippi, a sensational murder trial, and a youthful aviator named Charles Lindbergh who started the summer wholly unknown and finished it as the most famous man on earth. (So famous that Minnesota considered renaming itself after him.) It was the summer that saw the birth of talking pictures, the invention of television, the peak of Al Capone's reign of terror, the horrifying bombing of a school in Michigan by a madman, the ill-conceived decision that led to the Great Depression, the thrillingly improbable return to greatness of a wheezing, over-the-hill baseball player named Babe Ruth, and an almost impossible amount more.

Yin Yoga (1 Volume Set)

Description

How to balance Yoga practice. As Yoga matures in the U.S., this is a new approach to balance physical and mental health, for serious students and beginners. All yoga forms emphasizing either muscle (Yang) or connective (Yin) tissue. Today, all popular Yoga forms are Yang--muscular. Yin Yoga is unknown, but vital, as a balanced Yoga practice has many benefits, including better preparation for meditation. Yin Yoga focuses upon connective tissue, which does not stretch or respond to brief stresses as muscle will, so Yin postures are held a long time, with the muscles relaxed. Acupuncture meridians are also in connective tissues and Yin Yoga is specifically designed to stimulate them. Divided into two sections, the second part of the book deals with chakras, breathing exercises and meditation, and is fully illustrated with clear, concise descriptions of Yoga postures .

We're going on a bear hunt. We're going to catch a big one. Will you come too? For a quarter of a century, readers have been swishy-swashying and splash-sploshing through this award-winning favourite. Follow and join in the family's excitement as they wade through the grass, splash through the river and squelch through the mud in Yin Yoga (1 Volume Set) download PDF search of a bear. What a surprise awaits them in the cave on the other side of the dark forest! Leonard Ravenhill's call to revival is as timely now as it was when rst published over forty years ago. The message is fearless and often radical as he expounds on the disparity between the New Testament church and the church today. Why Revival Tarries contains the heart of his message. A.W. Tozer called Ravenhill "a man sent from God" who "appeared at [a] critical moment in history," just as the Old Testament prophets did. Included are questions for group and individual study. Ravi Zacharias refers to this as "the book that shaped me...more dramatically than any other..."

EDO Berger: Cosmic Explosions : The Beasts and Their Lair

Cosmic Explosions : The Beasts and Their Lair

Description

The diversity of stellar death is revealed in the energy, velocity and geometry of the explosion debris ("ejecta''). Using multi-wavelength observations of gamma-ray burst (GRB) afterglows I show that GRBs, arising from the death of massive stars, are marked by relativistic, collimated ejecta ("jets'') with a wide range of opening angles. These results suggest that various cosmic explosions are powered by a common energy source, an "engine'' (possibly an accreting stellar-mass black hole), with their diverse appearances determined solely by the variable high velocity output. On the other hand, using radio observations I show that local type Ibc core-collapse supernovae generally lack relativistic ejecta and are therefore not powered by engines. Instead, the highest velocity debris in these sources, typically with a velocity lower than 100,000 km/sec, are produced in the (effectively) spherical ejection of the stellar envelope. The relative rates of engine- and collapse-powered explosions suggest that the former account for only a small fraction of the stellar death rate. Using the first radio and submillimeter observations of GRB hosts, I show that some are extreme starburst galaxies with the bursts directly associated with the regions of most intense star formation. I suggest, by comparison to other well-studied samples, that GRBs preferentially occur in sub-luminous, low mass galaxies, undergoing the early stages of a starburst process. If confirmed with future observations, this trend will place GRBs in the forefront of star formation and galaxy evolution studies.

Susana Moreira Marques,Julia Sanches: Now and at the Hour of Our Death

Now and at the Hour of Our Death

Description

"This book is fearless and luminous and full of grace; it travels to the edge of death and finds life there. Its attention to the particulars of love - between the ones who will go and the ones they will leave - is something close to sublime."--Leslie Jamison, author of "The Empathy Exams"A nurse sleeps at the bedside of his dying patients; a wife deceives her husband by never telling him he has cancer; a bedridden man has to be hidden from his demented and amorous eighty-year-old wife. In her poignant and genre-busting debut, Susana Moreira Marques confronts us with our own mortality and inspires us to think about what is important.Accompanying a palliative care team, Moreira Marques travels to Tras-os-Montes, a forgotten corner of northern Portugal, a rural area abandoned by the young. Crossing great distances where eagles circle over the roads, she visits villages where rural ways of life are disappearing. She listens to families facing death and gives us their stories in their words as well as through her own meditations.Brilliantly blending the immediacy of oral history with the sensibility of philosophical reportage, Moreira Marques's book speaks about death in a fresh way.Susana Moreira Marques is a writer and journalist. She was born in Oporto in 1976 and now lives in Lisbon, where she writes for "Publico" and "Jornal de Negocios." Between 2005 and 2010 Moreira Marques lived in London, working at the BBC World Service while also serving as a correspondent for Portuguese newspaper "Publico." Her journalism has won several prizes, including the Premio AMI--Jornalismo Contra a Indiferenca and the 2012 UNESCO "Human Rights and Integration" Journalism Award (Portugal).Julia Sanches's translations have appeared in "Suelta," "The Washington Review," "Asymptote," "Two Lines," and "Revista Machado," amongst others. She currently lives in New York City.

Anne Carson,Lanfranco Quadrio: Nay Rather

Nay Rather

Description

Sylph Editions' Cahiers series features some of the most venerable names in literature and publishing as they embark on unique explorations in writing and translation. This newest installment unites two texts by celebrated Canadian poet Anne Carson. The first, "Variations on the Right to Remain Silent," is an essay on the stakes involved when translation happens and covers works ranging from Homer through Joan of Arc to Paul Celan. It also includes the author's seven translations of a poetic fragment from the Greek poet Ibykos. The second, "By Chance the Cycladic People," is a poem about Cycladic culture in which the order of the lines has been determined by a random number generator. The cahier is lavishly illustrated with drawings and gouaches by Lanfranco Quadrio.

Sethi draws on interviews with scientists, farmers, chefs, vintners, beer brewers, coffee roasters and others with firsthand knowledge of our food to reveal the multiple and interconnected reasons for this loss, and its consequences for our health, traditions, and culture. She travels to Ethiopian coffee forests, British yeast culture labs, and Ecuadoran cocoa plantations collecting fascinating stories that will inspire readers to eat more consciously and purposefully, better understand familiar and new foods, and learn what it takes to save the tastes that connect us with the world around us. High above the sky stands Swarga, paradise, abode of the gods. Still above is Vaikuntha, heaven, abode of God. This hilarious take on motoring from the AA offers advice on every conceivable aspect of motoring - from the desirability of lashings of chrome, to wooing with the aid of an automobile; from the power politics of the road, to dealing with passenger flatulence. The Gentleman's Guide to Motoring is a comprehensive guide to gentlemanly driving, from the essentials of delegating the maintenance of your vehicle, to the etiquette of the road; from advice on dealing with Around the World in 80 Dishes: Classic Recipes from the World's Favourite Chefs ebook pdf authority, to suggestions for improvements to the current system of road signage; from a handy identifying guide to species of fellow motorist, to ways of blagging your driving test.

Sarah Thornton: Seven Days in the Art World

Seven Days in the Art World

Doubting: Growing Through the Uncertainties of Faith

Description

We live in a culture that doubts everything as a matter of principle. In such an environment, how can even faith be immune to doubt? Can I really trust in the gospel? Does God really love me? Can I really be of any use to God? We are taught to doubt but commanded to believe. Somehow we think that admitting to doubt is tantamount to insulting God. But doubt is not a sign of spiritual weakness--rather it's an indication of spiritual growing pains. Alister McGrath, no stranger to a faith born of doubt, here offers good news to doubters: your faith can grow, and strengthen as it grows. It needs to take root in your experience of God, it needs to take in the nourishment of instruction in the words and ways of God, it needs to be stretched into greater obedience to the commands and calling of God--but it can grow beyond doubt into a thriving relationship.

Ginger You're Barmy

Description

When it isn't prison, it's hell. Or at least that's the heartfelt belief of conscripts Jonathan Browne and Mike 'Ginger' Brady. For this is the British Army in the days of National Service, a grimy deposit of post-war gloom. An endless round of kit layout, square-bashing, shepherd's pie 'made with real shepherds' and drills is relieved only by the occasional lecture on firearms or V.D. The reckless, impulsive Mike and the more pragmatic Jonathan adopt radically different attitudes to survive this two-year confiscation of their freedom, with dramatic consequences

Written between 1975 and the present, the essays collected in this volume representyears of research and theorizing on questions of social reproduction and the consequences of globalization. Originally inspired by Federici's organizational work in the Wages for Housework movement, the topics discussed include the international restructuring of reproductive work and its effects on the sexual division of labor, the globalization of care work and sex work, the crisis of elder care, and the development of affective labor. Both a brief history of the international feminist movement and a contemporary critique of capitalism, these writings continue the investigation of the economic roots of violence against women." This Lonely Planet Italy free download pdf is an account of the essential aspects of the new physics for those with little or no knowledge of mathematics or science. It describes current theories of quantum mechanics, Einstein's special and general theories of relativity and other speculations, alluding throughout to parallels with modern psychology and metaphorical abstractions to Buddhism and Taoism. The author has also written "The Seat of the Soul".
